Welcome to the English Department.
Staff
The English Department at Oakdale Comprehensive School consists of three specialist English teachers:
Mrs M Edwards - CTL English
Miss D Hall
Mrs S Cooper
Mrs D Jones - our SENCO, also teaches English to classes in Key Stage Four
At Key Stage Three, our units of work have been revised and developed in line with the new National Curriculum, which has a much more skills based focus. Pupils are given a rich variety of literature, language, non-fiction, media and drama. We have lessons dedicated to technical accuracy in writing and, throughout Years Seven and Eight, pupils undertake a series of study projects aimed at promoting independent learning. In order to assist the move from primary to secondary, we also have a specific transition unit of work which is begun in the summer term of primary school and completed during the first weeks of Year Seven. Pupils are assessed throughout Key Stage Three in the three English attainment targets: Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. Individual learner profiles are created to ensure that the end of Key Stage Three teacher assessment is thorough and accurate.
At Key Stage Four, pupils we offer two GCSE courses - English and English Literature, or Entry Level English if more appropriate. The courses are carefully structured to ensure that pupils are thoroughly prepared for all of the different elements such as coursework, oral assessments and written examinations. Students are taught to read with understanding and study novels, plays and poetry, in addition to improving the accuracy and fluency of their writing in a variety of formats, such as narratives, descriptions, letters and reviews. Lessons in speaking and listening ensure that pupils develop life skills such as collaborating effectively in groups and the ability and confidence to present a talk to an audience.
Our contribution to school life extends beyond the classroom - we regularly contribute to the extra curricular life of the school, running a Creative Writing Club, entering pupils in a variety of external competitions, arranging author visits and organizing theatre trips. The expertise of Miss Hall as library coordinator is utilized to encourage pupils? wider reading.
As a department, we are committed to helping pupils achieve their full potential in English, but we are also determined to make positive contributions to the development of the pupil as a whole.
